The Croatian Sheepdog Conservation Club
of the USA
We are dedicated to the stewardship of the Croatian Sheepdog, protecting its unique traits and working heritage through responsible breeding and education.
History
The Croatian Sheepdog has deep roots in Croatia's agricultural heritage. Historical records dating to 1374 describe black herding dogs remarkably similar to today's Croatian Sheepdog. For centuries, these dogs worked alongside shepherds, moving sheep, cattle, pigs, goats, and other livestock while adapting to the changing demands of rural life.
Unlike many breeds developed primarily for appearance, the Croatian Sheepdog evolved through practical farm work. Only dogs demonstrating intelligence, sound temperament, endurance, and exceptional working ability were selected for breeding. During the 20th century, Croatian breeders and cynologists established the modern breed standard while preserving the characteristics that had defined the breed for generations.

Herding Instinct
Herding is the defining characteristic of the Croatian Sheepdog. For centuries, the breed has been selected for its natural ability to gather, move, and control livestock efficiently and thoughtfully. Croatian Sheepdogs possess excellent balance, responsiveness to stock, quick reactions, and the confidence to work independently when needed while remaining attentive to their handler. Even companion dogs often display natural herding behaviors, reflecting generations of careful selection for instinct and working ability.
Temperament
The Croatian Sheepdog is an intelligent, loyal, and highly devoted breed that forms close bonds with its family. Alert and observant, it is naturally watchful without being unnecessarily aggressive.
Highly trainable and eager to please, the breed responds well to positive, consistent training. Because it was developed as an active working dog, the Croatian Sheepdog thrives in homes that provide regular exercise, mental stimulation, and meaningful interaction with its family.
Preservation
The Croatian Sheepdog represents a living piece of Croatia's cultural and agricultural heritage. Preserving the breed means protecting not only its distinctive appearance but also the instincts, temperament, health, and working ability that have defined it for centuries.
The Croatian Sheepdog Conservation Club of the USA is dedicated to responsible breeding, education, and stewardship of the breed. By working in cooperation with breeders, owners, and enthusiasts in both the United States and Croatia, the Club strives to preserve the Croatian Sheepdog as the versatile, intelligent, and capable working dog it has always been.
